Hey guys,

Iv'e recently discovered the world of RC quadcopters, and UAV shortly after. Sounds fun. I would like to build a quadcopter (APM2). Now this thing can be programmed to fly to a destination using gps. I would like to add a FPV system to it so i can watch as it flies.

Iv'e heard its a bad idea to fly in populated areas, but would this make a difference as its not actually radio controlled.

Can anyone also suggest a good video system for use in the UK, im thinking the gopro hd, but in terms in communication i have no clue.

Could i not just stick my old android phone on there and video call my PC?

MR Mike
Welcome Mr mike!

No, your phone video call wont refresh quickly enough, and will have a lag (Delay) that wont let you fly properly!

UAV in populated area, not the best idea to be honest. Equipment fails all the time and the last thing you want ois damage to other propertly.

Here in the UK we can only use a 10mw video link (1.5km distance roughly)

Where are you in the UK?
In my opinion the only way to fly fpv/uav in populated area is:
-High power video transmitter such as lawmate 1W/fox 1.5W 1.2ghz
-receiver with replaced SAW filter
-high gain directional antenna, maybe try circular polarisation.

it's too many polution on 2.4ghz everywhere. On 1280mhz channel/1W/8db patch is acceptable and able to fly safely about 1-1.5km in populated area. You can always check what cannel is the best for fly before flight, only turn on video receiver and watch "snow". If it's clear or not many poluted is ok. Some stripes are ok and normal in poluted area. Bad range provides many black areas or white areas, of course other video signal Rolleyes

I agree that fly in poluted area is not a good idea, it can be safe only with proper experience and technical preparation.
Please dont use a 1watt or 1.5watt video transmitter NEVER ON 1.2Ghz as in the Uk that what ATC use (Highly illegal and you will serve jail time) :-)

Hey,

Thanks for reply,

When I say UAV, I don't actually wish to control the flight via FPV, i was thinking i could say GPS waypoints in the software, set the QC off from home, it would then fly the journey, whilst recording and/or streaming the video back to me. Not so i can control it, but just so i can see the view.

10mw video link! Is that it? Owell, i guess il have to use the 900mhz (with an actual mobile phone so its legal) ((video call)).

I know there is lag, but surprisingly you can actually get quite a fast refresh if your connected on a 3G network, and your resolution isn't set to HD quality, 1 second delay id say.

Im in the north-east, stockton on tees.
