I have an idea for a project, and have set it as a milestone goal for myself.

What I want to do is fly and record a First Person View flight from Kentucky to Indiana. The idea is to take off from the Kentucky side of the Ohio river (East of Downtown Louisville) and land on the Indiana side of the river. I would like to fly at an average altitude of 250' AGL.

The area is a very pretty area, and would make a very nice video. The interstate flight and landing challenge makes it fun.

What do you think?

Here are a couple of pictures of where I am trying to fly to try to give you some perspective.

This might be a first ameature interstate fpv flight? Not sure
Wikipidia says the river is the widest west of Louisville at 1 mile. I am flying from the eastern side of Louisville so it may be a little shorter distance but I need to do further research which I will update here.

I plan to pick a field to land in Indiana and have a buddy there with an extra battery charged and ready. When I land the buddy will change out the battery and set me up for a flight back for landing again in Kentucky.

What would be decent low cost gear to accomplish this flight?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
This is the area I have nailed down for the flight.

Google Map of Launch and Landing Points

I will fly from the south (Kentucky) side of the river from the Patriots Peace Memorial at the park, and fly over the river to land on the North (Indiana) side. There looks to be a great open field to land at just on the other side of the river, and wide open areas to land and take off from on both sides.

The landing area on the Indiana side is field south of Utika Pike, just about the intersection of Carolina Drive (in the field of course). Looks plenty big enough. Now just need to find out who owns the land and get permissions if needed for my crew to be there.
Look like fun, Good luck.
Great project James!

But be carefull: If you are landing on the other side, you can get video downlink problems (depends on frequency and patch antenna position).
A tracking antenna would be very useful for this flight Wink

Thank you for the advice about the tracking antenna. I will definitely be looking into it. Did you view the area map where I will be flying? The landing area is a large field.

I wonder if I would be better off flying from the Indiana side and have someone else launch my plane from the Kentucky side. That way the signal gets stronger the closer I get to myself. I really would like to fly there and back, but would be very happy with a one way flight.

Thanks Viruss!
One other way I can think of is to have the other person have a Tx. to on the same channel as you. Have a plan when he should take over etc., use cell phone, and test some where else, before flying over the river
